There is a particular kind of curiosity that belongs to childhood — the instinct to question everything, take familiar things apart, and imagine that they could become something completely different. For SORÉ SELÉSU, that curiosity becomes the starting point for a collection exploring what happens when imagination and play are used to confront reality.
The Johannesburg-based brand approaches child-like imagination not as an escape, but as a survival mechanism. The collection looks at the structures surrounding us — expectations, uniforms, systems, rules and definitions of success — and asks what happens when we begin to see them differently.
## Questioning What Becomes Normal
At the heart of the project is the belief that curiosity can challenge what has become normalised. Familiar garments are reworked and rearranged, while office uniforms become part of a visual language that feels both recognisable and unfamiliar.
The clothing becomes a way of questioning the roles and expectations attached to these familiar forms. Instead of accepting them as fixed, SORÉ SELÉSU creates space to reinterpret them through imagination.
That process feels playful, but there is something more serious underneath. The collection acknowledges that the world can be structured, demanding and difficult to process. Rather than ignoring those realities, it approaches them from another perspective — one that leaves room for curiosity and experimentation.
## Between Innocence and Awareness
A strong tension runs through the project between innocence and awareness.
Child-like imagination is often associated with freedom and play, but this collection explores what happens when that perspective exists after exposure to the complexities of the world. The result is not perfectly innocent. At times, the visual language feels exaggerated, strange and slightly unsettling.
Origami flowers become part of this exploration, introducing ideas of transformation and reconstruction. Something delicate and familiar can be folded and reshaped into something unexpected, reflecting the same approach taken throughout the garments.
The collection suggests that growing older does not necessarily mean abandoning curiosity. In fact, curiosity can become even more meaningful once we understand the world we are questioning.
## Play With a Purpose
Here, play becomes more than a visual idea. It becomes a method.
It creates space to experiment, to question established meanings and to approach familiar objects without immediately accepting their intended purpose. Through this process, SORÉ SELÉSU allows imagination to become a way of understanding rather than simply escaping.
The office uniform, for example, carries associations of routine, professionalism and conformity. By reworking it, the collection opens those associations to another interpretation.
The clothes therefore become more than objects to wear. They become part of a wider conversation about identity, expectation and the structures we move through every day.
## Imagination as Resistance
Perhaps the central idea of the project is that imagination can become a form of armour.
When the world becomes increasingly structured and demanding, remaining curious can itself become an act of resistance. Not necessarily through confrontation, but through the decision to question what feels fixed and imagine what else might be possible.
The work does not suggest that imagination can solve the complexities of reality. Instead, it proposes that imagination can help us navigate them — giving us another language for understanding, questioning and creating meaning.
The visual world of SORÉ SELÉSU sits between the familiar and the strange. Structured garments meet playful details, delicate forms meet rigid references, and innocence exists alongside awareness.
Rather than telling us exactly how to interpret the collection, the project leaves room for curiosity to do some of the work.
In a world that often rewards certainty, remaining curious can be its own form of freedom.
SORÉ SELÉSU doesn't ask us to forget reality. It asks us to keep imagining within it.
